Marine Resources has published its third edition of the UK Marine Industry Salary & Employment Survey, revealing a notable shift in employee priorities toward salary. Managing Director James Ward noted that, for the first time, salary is the most significant factor for job seekers, reflecting the current economic climate and cost-of-living challenges.
In response to these findings, many companies are raising salaries, especially for lower-level positions. Employees are also seeking clearer leadership and defined career progression, which are crucial for retention. However, inconsistent access to training and professional development remains a concern across the industry.
The survey indicated that over 60% of participants feel they are underpaid compared to market standards. Since 2022, salary midpoints for marine roles have risen by 11.66%, falling short of the UK average increase of 18.18% reported by the Office of National Statistics.
Additionally, the industry is facing a potential crisis, as there is a decline in young people entering the field, which could lead to significant workforce challenges in the next decade.
