Sri Lanka Secures Release of Six Seafarers Detained in Eritrea

The Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism Ministry, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Mission in Egypt and Eritrean authorities, has successfully repatriated six Sri Lankan seafarers who were detained in Eritrea. This operation underscores the ministry’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of Sri Lankan nationals abroad.

Under the directives of Minister Vijitha Herath, the Sri Lankan Ambassador in Cairo, who is also accredited to Eritrea, traveled to Asmara to oversee the necessary procedures for the seafarers’ return. This coordinated effort highlights the importance of diplomatic channels in resolving such situations.

Upon their arrival, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism welcomed the group at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo. This marks a successful conclusion to a challenging episode for the affected seafarers and their families.

The ministry remains dedicated to providing ongoing consular support to Sri Lankans overseas and will continue to take all essential measures to safeguard their interests in the future.
