Tackling the Core Issues Behind Seafarer Exploitation

Ahead of this week’s Crew Connect summit in Manila, Henrik Jensen, CEO of Danica Maritime Services, highlights a pressing issue in the maritime industry: the exploitation of seafarers by unscrupulous crewing agents. While it’s crucial to condemn these practices, we must also acknowledge the broader issues that perpetuate them. Not all seafarers are innocent victims; some actively participate in the deception by paying agents to falsify their qualifications.

This document fraud undermines the integrity of the maritime profession. Crewing agencies often manipulate CVs and service records to present an “ideal” candidate, misleading shipowners and compromising safety. An unqualified individual on board not only endangers themselves but also their crew and the environment. This criminal behavior must be confronted, as it poses significant risks that cannot be overlooked.

Moreover, authorities in certain countries often fail to prosecute those involved in document fraud, treating it as a minor infraction rather than a serious offense. This lack of enforcement perpetuates the cycle of deceit. While seafarers face immense pressure to secure employment, this does not excuse reckless actions. The industry must prioritize transparency and accountability, ensuring that all parties involved are held responsible for their actions.

At Danica, we operate with integrity, refusing to charge seafarers for placements and collaborating only with reputable shipowners. However, addressing this issue requires collective action. Shipowners must conduct thorough checks, regulators need to enforce laws, and industry bodies should promote transparency in crewing practices. To maintain trust and safety in shipping, we must confront and eliminate practices that compromise the industry’s integrity.
