Ukraine is launching a pilot program for remote processing of Seafarers’ Identity Documents (SIDs), aimed at aiding thousands of maritime professionals stranded abroad due to the ongoing conflict. A remote processing center will be established in Warsaw, Poland, allowing Ukrainian seafarers to apply for or renew their SIDs without returning home. While a specific launch date is yet to be announced, industry experts anticipate the program will commence in the coming months.
Henrik Jensen, CEO of Danica Crewing Specialists, commended Ukraine for taking a leadership role in addressing this pressing issue. He emphasized that the initiative could inspire other countries to modernize their support for seafarers. The reform shifts SID issuance responsibility from local port captains to the Maritime Administration, integrating with Ukraine’s digital infrastructure. Documents not collected within a certain timeframe will be automatically invalidated, simplifying the process.
Jensen highlighted the urgency of this reform, noting that outdated procedures have often forced Ukrainian crew members off ships despite their willingness to work. This remote option is not only convenient but essential for their livelihoods. The initiative represents a significant modernization of maritime services, promising greater continuity and security for Ukraine’s workforce.
