NIMASA not Withdrawing 296 Seafarers from Centurion University – DG

The director general of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, has reiterated the agency’s commitment to the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP). He emphasized that the 296 NSDP beneficiaries currently at Centurion University in India will receive quality training to become globally employable seafarers. Despite media reports suggesting otherwise, Dr. Mobereola clarified that there are no plans to withdraw the NSDP cadets from the university. The agency is simply ensuring that the existing Memorandum of Understanding is aligned in the best interest of Nigerian students.

Dr. Mobereola highlighted issues with the existing MoU, such as non-accreditation of institutions, unauthorized course changes, and concerns about funding and third-party arrangements. The agency is working diligently to address these gaps before proceeding further. He also addressed a sponsored media campaign against NIMASA, stating that such actions will not deter the agency from prioritizing the safety and well-being of the students.

Introduced in 2009, the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme aims to train young Nigerians in specialized courses like Marine Engineering and Nautical Sciences to address the global shortage of seafarers. The program is designed to equip Nigerian youths with the skills needed to qualify as seafarers and secure employment opportunities worldwide. NIMASA remains committed to ensuring the success of the NSDP and will continue to uphold the highest standards in maritime education and training.
