NYK has received certification from ClassNK for Japan’s inaugural training program designed for crew members of Crew Transfer Vessels (CTVs) in the offshore wind industry. The training will commence in April at the Akita School of Wind and Sea Training Center in Oga City, Akita Prefecture, offering a total of three programs. The Class NK certification validates the simulator-based training program for operating CTVs, ensuring it meets international standards through an evaluation of various factors such as training framework, instructor competency, and student satisfaction.
The training utilizes advanced ship handling simulators to replicate challenging scenarios like vessels colliding with offshore wind turbines in rough sea conditions, aiming to enhance the navigation safety skills required for handling CTVs. The training center has started accepting applications for its first course, which is Basic Worker Safety Training (Course I), with applications for the other two courses, Basic Seafarer Safety Training (Course II) and Simulator-Based Training for Operating CTVs (Course III), to follow shortly. This initiative reflects a strong commitment to improving safety standards in the offshore wind industry.
The program’s focus on practical, hands-on training using cutting-edge simulators underscores the importance of enhancing crew members’ skills to navigate CTVs safely. By offering structured training programs that meet international quality standards, NYK is contributing to the development of a skilled workforce in the offshore wind sector. The training center’s rigorous evaluation process ensures that crew members receive comprehensive training, equipping them with the necessary expertise to operate CTVs efficiently and safely in challenging conditions at sea.
