NYK is conducting a comprehensive trial to carefully assess the safety and safe sourcing of biofuels during extended use. This initiative not only aims to establish a safe navigation system using biofuels, but also underlines NYK’s commitment to promoting the development of biofuels. The company has set an ambitious goal of achieving a 45% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by fiscal year 2030 compared to fiscal year 2021.
The trial will involve the continuous use of biofuels on different types of ships for three months. Following this initial phase, NYK plans to gradually expand the application of biofuels over a longer period of time to conduct a more in-depth validation and analysis. This goes beyond previous short-term testing conducted by the company since the 2019 financial year, and aims to assess the impact of long-term use on critical ship components and the quality of biofuels after extended storage.
The initiative is part of the NYK Group’s broader commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as outlined in the NYK Group ESG Story 2023. The company is actively working to validate the integration of biofuels as part of its efforts to achieve its environmental goals.
