NYK has entered into an agreement with ENEOS to purchase marine fuel that includes CO2 removal credits obtained through direct air capture with carbon storage. These credits will be sourced from 1PointFive’s STRATOS Direct Air Capture plant in Texas, set to begin operations in 2025. The process involves extracting CO2 from the atmosphere and securely storing it underground. ENEOS will supply these credits and marine fuel to NYK for a period of five years starting in 2028.
ENEOS introduced its carbon offset fuel in January 2024, marking a significant step towards reducing emissions in the maritime industry. By partnering with 1PointFive’s innovative technology, ENEOS is able to offer a more sustainable fuel option to customers like NYK. This collaboration not only supports environmental conservation efforts but also demonstrates a commitment to adopting cleaner energy solutions in the shipping sector.
The initiative to incorporate CO2 removal credits into marine fuel purchases reflects a growing trend towards decarbonization in the shipping industry. Companies like NYK are increasingly seeking ways to reduce their carbon footprint and meet sustainability goals. By leveraging advancements in carbon capture technology, ENEOS and 1PointFive are paving the way for a more environmentally friendly approach to maritime fuel consumption.
