Macau authorities are urging casino operators to increase collaboration with companies to promote maritime tourism. The chief of the Marine and Water Bureau, Susana Wong Soi Man, stated that there will be three providers of maritime tourism services this year, up from two previously. She highlighted the positive impact of gaming companies working with maritime travel companies on increasing routes and diversifying forms of collaboration.

The partnerships between gaming companies and maritime travel companies are focused on two annual campaigns – the Macao International Fireworks Display Contest and Light Up Macao. However, there is a lack of interest in sea-based recreational activities in Macau, with officials noting that Zhuhai attracts more participants due to greater interest and market size. This has made it challenging for investors to see returns and for the industry to grow.

To improve convenience for passengers, authorities introduced a pier to Barra in 2021. Despite efforts to boost maritime tourism in Macau, there are still challenges to overcome in order to attract more visitors and investment in sea-based recreational activities. The call for deeper collaboration between casino operators and maritime tourism companies reflects the government’s commitment to promoting this sector and diversifying the city’s tourism offerings.
