The Philippine Coast Guard is currently investigating reports of debris and potential sightings of bodies following the disappearance of a coastal cargo ship during a recent typhoon. The vessel, MV Sta. Monica-A1, had 10 crew members on board when it set out last week. The shipping company, Synergy Sea Venture, reported that the vessel encountered heavy weather and was seeking shelter due to adverse conditions.
The search for the missing vessel began on October 27 when the company was unable to reach the crew. Aerial searches were conducted by the Coast Guard in hopes of locating the vessel, while assistance from ships in the area was also sought. Fishermen discovered debris, including 10 LPG tanks, which were confirmed to belong to the missing vessel. Additionally, a resident reported finding a life jacket and two unmarked life rings marked “MV Sta Monica-A1” approximately 10 nautical miles off Paluan.
In response to these developments, the Philippine Coast Guard conducted aerial searches over the waters off North East El Nido and Mamburao, Mindoro, to locate further signs of the missing vessel. Local fishermen reported seeing bodies floating in the water around 14 nautical miles off Paluan, as well as additional debris. Despite these sightings, the proximity of the objects prevented closer investigation. The Coast Guard continues its coastal and seaborne patrols in search of more debris and signs of the missing vessel.
