The Philippines plays an active role in promoting international maritime safety and security at the 108th session of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 108) at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Headquarters in London. Led by Undersecretary for Maritime Elmer Francisco Sarmiento and Marina Administrator Sonia Malaluan, the Philippine delegation participates in discussions focused on critical issues such as maritime security in the Red Sea, global safety standards, seafarers’ concerns, regulating autonomous vessels, piracy, cybersecurity, and safety issues related to emerging technologies and decarbonization of ships.

Chaired by Mayte Medina of the United States and supported by vice chairman Capt. Theofilos Mozas of Greece, MSC 108 runs from May 15–24, 2024. The Philippine participants include various officials such as STCWO Executive Director Samuel Batalla, Marina Chief of Staff Ramon Hernandez, Maritime Attaché Jean Ver Pia, and Coast Guard Commander Mary Leizl Barbero. Discussions also involve remote participation from other representatives, highlighting the country’s commitment to global maritime safety standards and addressing pressing issues in the industry.
