Armed pirates recently hijacked a Thai tanker in the South China Sea near the Malaysian island of Tioman. The incident occurred as the tanker was en route from Singapore to Thailand. The pirates forced the crew into the engine room while they transferred the tanker’s cargo of oil to another vessel. Fortunately, the crew members were unharmed during the incident.
The International Maritime Bureau’s Piracy Reporting Centre confirmed the occurrence and stated that the ship and crew have since been released. The pirates successfully took control of the tanker and pumped out its oil cargo before letting the crew go unharmed. The stolen cargo was siphoned off to another vessel during the hijacking, which underscores the ongoing threat of piracy in the region.
