Proman Stena Bulk celebrated the christening of the Stena Prosperous, the last of six methanol-powered tankers ordered by the joint venture between Stena Bulk and Proman. The ceremony took place in Singapore at the Marina Bay Cruise Centre. The vessel received a methanol blend via ship-to-ship transfer, achieving a 31% CO2e saving compared to traditional fuel oil, as well as reducing PM, SOx, and NOx emissions.
The six methanol-powered tankers are all in commercial operation and running on methanol, with the first one delivered in June 2022. Methanol as a fuel is known to significantly reduce emissions, with green methanol from biogas offering greenhouse gas savings of more than 90%. Preliminary analyses show that the fleet has achieved around 5,500 tonnes of greenhouse gas savings by running on methanol instead of traditional fuel.
The fleet is operated by Northern Marine Group and benefits from the $300 million LEMSCO Fund, focused on sustainable investments for the energy transition. CEO of Proman, David Cassidy, highlighted the importance of Singapore as a bunkering hub and the role of methanol in decarbonizing the industry. Stena Bulk’s President and CEO Erik Hånell emphasized the company’s commitment to proving that concrete steps can be taken towards decarbonization through pragmatism and flexibility.
