Norwegian shipbuilder Vard recently completed the conversion of the IT Infinity vessel from a Platform Supply Vessel (PSV) to a specialized Cable Laying Vessel (CLV) for I.T. International Telecom Marine. Originally built in 2008 as the Volstad Princess at Vard Brattvaag and later acquired by SD Standard Drilling in 2017, the vessel was sold to IT in 2021 and renamed IT Infinity. In 2024, the vessel underwent an extensive conversion at Vard Brattvaag in Norway to meet the demands of the subsea telecommunications industry.
The conversion work included adding new accommodations for 32 people and required approximately 550 tons of steel sourced and processed in Norway. Vard Electro upgraded the vessel’s electrical systems by installing new switchboards and cabling, while Vard Interiors delivered a new HVAC system for modern and efficient operations. Wilhelm Eggesbø, Senior Vice President of Vard Services at Vard, expressed pride in the partnership with IT and highlighted Vard’s expertise in designing and constructing advanced cable laying vessels.
Steve Arsenault, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at IT, emphasized the importance of starting with a sea-worthy vessel and enhancing it with the latest-generation submarine cable handling and burial equipment. The collaboration between IT and Vard resulted in an extremely capable asset ready to serve the global subsea telecommunications market. The successful conversion project showcases Vard’s strength in its integrated value chain and solidifies its position in the aftermarket.
