Revitalizing Women’s Leadership in the Caribbean Maritime Association

The Women in Maritime Association Caribbean (WiMAC) recently held its Regional Conference and 6th Annual General Meeting, bringing together members from 15 countries across the Caribbean. The conference aimed to mobilize stronger networks for Caribbean women in the maritime industry. During the meeting, a new Governing Council was elected, with Dr Evette Smith Johnson from Jamaica as the new President. The conference also featured the launch of a Student Chapter at the Caribbean Maritime University in Jamaica. Keynote speaker Eva Lewis, Director of Citi Jamaica, challenged attendees to redefine “network” and emphasized the importance of mentorship and vulnerability. WiMAC is one of eight Women in Maritime Associations established under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to improve gender balance in the shipping industry. The next WiMAC Conference and AGM will be hosted by the Maritime Authority Jamaica in 2023.
