Royal Caribbean Group has announced plans to order a seventh Oasis-class cruise ship, following similar orders from Carnival Corporation and MSC Cruises. The ship is expected to be built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in France, with completion of the financing expected later this year. The new ship would join the group’s pipeline, which includes two Icon class cruise ships and one additional Oasis class ship due in 2025 and 2026.
The Oasis class ships were first introduced in 2009 and have continued to grow in size, with the newest ship, Utopia of the Seas, set to enter service in July 2024. The new Oasis ship is expected to arrive in 2028, marking a return to new ship deliveries after a two-year pause. The order will also solidify Chantiers’ order book out to 2028, with the shipyard also building a 215,000 gross ton cruise ship for MSC Cruises.
The cruise industry has seen a surge in new ship construction following the pandemic, with over 300 ocean-going cruise ships currently in service. However, the order book for new ships had been dwindling, with deliveries and no large ship orders. The addition of new orders is expected to help build back the long-term business prospects for shipyards.
