Sagarmanthan, known as South Asia’s largest maritime thought leadership summit, commenced in New Delhi with the goal of sparking global discussions on the “blue economy,” according to Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union minister for ports, shipping, and waterways. The two-day event has attracted ministers and high-ranking officials from 61 countries, including Greece, Maldives, and Argentina. The summit, organized by the Government of India in partnership with the Observer Research Foundation, aims to bring together policymakers, maritime experts, industry leaders, and scholars to explore sustainable and innovative maritime practices.
During the inaugural session, Sonowal outlined India’s ambitious plans to transform its maritime sector through an investment of Rs 80 lakh crore to boost port capacity, shipping, shipbuilding, and inland waterways. By 2047, India aims to achieve a port handling capacity of 10,000 million metric tons per annum, utilizing strategic trade routes such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor and the International North-South Transport Corridor. Sonowal emphasized the importance of leveraging these initiatives to enhance India’s maritime capabilities and strengthen its position in global trade.
The summit serves as a platform for global dialogue on maritime issues, with a focus on advancing sustainable and innovative practices in the industry. Through collaboration and discussion among key stakeholders, the event aims to drive progress in the maritime sector and promote economic growth. Sonowal’s vision for India’s maritime future underscores the country’s commitment to investing in its maritime infrastructure and leveraging strategic partnerships to achieve its goals.
