The charity Sailors’ Society has launched a crisis appeal in response to the escalating attacks on ships in the Red Sea by Yemen’s Houthi militia. These attacks have resulted in significant disruptions to trade between Asia and Europe, affecting supply chains and causing financial impacts from rerouting ships. The appeal aims to draw attention to the danger posed to sailors by explosive drones and missiles and the high human cost faced by those caught in the conflict. The Sailors’ Society’s Crisis Response Network is providing essential support for the mental health and well-being of seafarers, who are responsible for transporting over 90% of the world’s goods.

Sara Baade, the executive director of the Sailors’ Society, emphasized the concerns of sailors approaching the Red Sea and the challenges of rerouting around the Horn of Africa. She highlighted the impact of tropical cyclones on Mauritius and the looming threat of piracy in regions like Somalia and the Gulf of Guinea. The charity’s 24/7 Crisis Response Network is prepared to help seafarers prepare for these challenging situations, support their families, and address any longer-lasting effects of trauma. The appeal aims to mobilize resources to help those risking their lives at sea and to ease the emotional toll on their well-being.
