The Singapore authorities say they are working closely with parties involved in the suspected hijacking of the Singapore-registered tanker Success 9 off Cote d’lvoire.

The Singapore-registered 6,135 dwt chemical tanker was reportedly boarded by pirates around 14:00 (UTC) on April 10, some 300 nautical miles off the coast of Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

According to the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), which manages Singapore’s shipping register, there were 20 crew members of different nationalities on board the ship, including a Singaporean national.

“MPA is working closely with the shipowner, the Monrovia Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Center and the Information Fusion Center at Changi Command and Control Center to monitor the situation and provide necessary assistance,” the agency said.

According to the Equasis database, the tanker built in 2003 is managed by Fortune Shp Management Pte Ltd and owned by HS Ocean Pte Ltd. Fortune Ship Management is part of the Hai Soon Group, a Singapore-based bunkering and shipping company.

Despite general improvements in the number of piracy attacks in recent years, West Africa remains a trouble spot.
