In 2023, a collaborative project on small vessel stability was initiated by TSC and Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI), with funding provided by the Wolfson Unit, a marine technology consultancy at the University of Southampton, and the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations (NFFO). The project, conducted in two phases, aimed to investigate various aspects of the code of practice related to small vessel stability.
The research project utilized the facilities at Southampton University’s Boldrewood Towing Tank, a 138-meter testing tank, to conduct tests on a model-scale double-chine monohull and a model-scale hard-chine catamaran. The investigations focused on key provisions such as minimum freeboard, water freeing arrangements, bulwark height, and conditional certification. The findings from these tests are expected to provide valuable insights into enhancing small vessel stability and safety measures.
By bringing together expertise from academia and industry, the collaborative project sought to address challenges faced by small vessel operators in ensuring stability and compliance with regulations. The research conducted by the Wolfson Unit, in partnership with NFFO, represents a significant step towards improving the understanding of small vessel stability and enhancing safety standards within the maritime industry.
