Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has encouraged the youth of the northeast region to undergo training in maritime skills at the Maritime Skill Development Centre in Guwahati. This training will help them access employment opportunities in the marine sector. Speaking at a stakeholders’ conference organized by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) in Chumoukedima, Sonowal emphasized the importance of acquiring skills in the maritime industry for securing employment.
Sonowal highlighted the significance of waterways as the most economical, sustainable, and efficient mode of transportation. He mentioned that the Centre has prioritized the development of inland waterways in the country to establish an effective transportation system. The minister announced plans to harness the Tizu-Zunki River in Nagaland for cargo and passenger transport, as well as to develop the Doyang River Lake in Wokha district for tourism potential with community jetties and Ro Pax ferries.
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio echoed Sonowal’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for active participation in the development of waterways for economic growth in the state. He urged the youth to pursue training in the maritime sector, highlighting the benefits of acquiring skills for better job opportunities. Both leaders underscored the potential of waterways in driving economic development and urged stakeholders to leverage the revamped waterways in the region for growth and progress.
