DNV has assessed the potential gains for owners of LNG carriers using the new Dual Fuel, Electric+ (DFE+) solution developed by ABB and MAN Energy Solutions. The solution, which includes MAN’s four-stroke 49/60DF dual fuel engine and ABB’s Dynamic AC power distribution and control system, aims to overcome efficiency challenges specific to LNG carriers. DNV’s assessment concludes that the DFE+ concept is a competitive and more energy efficient alternative, with potential for 5 percent greater cargo capacity and overall energy savings of 6 – 7.5 percent.
Starting January 1, 2023, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) will require shipowners to report vessels into an Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), an Energy Efficiency Existing Ships Index (EEXI), and an operational Carbon Intensity Index (CII). The MAN 49/60DF engine is optimized for LNG and compatible with ABB’s Dynamic AC system, offering significant improvements in total fuel consumption. ABB and MAN will also explore integrating fuel cells as the technology matures.
According to Prof. George Dimopoulos, Scientific Advisor at DNV, the ABB – MAN propulsion concept offers a highly effective way for LNG carriers to meet tightening emissions regulations and reduce fuel costs. Rune Lysebo, Strategic Market Development at ABB Marine & Ports, emphasizes the need for new technologies to meet the requirements for LNG carriers, with DNV’s testimony proving the time is right to explore next-generation technologies for this vessel type.
