NYK Line, IHI Power Systems, Nihon Shipyard, Japan Engine Corporation, and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai have announced the successful completion of land-based tests for the world’s first ammonia-fuelled four-stroke engine with an ammonia co-combustion ratio of 80%. The project, part of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) Green Innovation Fund, aims to create vessels equipped with domestically manufactured ammonia fuel engines and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. IHI Power Systems began operational testing of a 280mm bore four-stroke ammonia-fueled marine engine in April 2023 for the main engine of coastal vessels.

The engine, which will be installed on an ammonia-fueled tugboat, will undergo further onshore testing in June 2024 to further improve the co-firing rate to maximize GHG reductions. The consortium is also developing a 250mm bore engine for the auxiliary engine of a seagoing ship and an ammonia-fueled ammonia gas tanker. The consortium aims to build the world’s first ammonia-powered ships and contribute to the development of international rules to achieve safe navigation while strengthening Japan’s international competitiveness in the maritime cluster.
