Icon Offshore Berhad has finally confirmed an accident that occurred on one of its offshore vessels over a week and a half after the incident took place on August 2. The company was criticized by local media for not issuing a statement sooner. Two crew members, the assistant engineer and an oiler, were killed in the accident on the platform supply vessel Icon Amara, while a second oiler sustained serious burns and was being treated in a local hospital.
The vessel, built in 2011, was near the Sapar Alpha platform when an explosion occurred in the engine room at 10:30 p.m. local time, causing significant damage. The crew rushed to the scene to find three individuals unconscious on the deck. Despite efforts to save them, two crew members succumbed to their injuries, while the injured oiler was receiving medical treatment.
Icon Offshore Berhad expressed condolences to the families of the victims and stated that they were cooperating with the investigation alongside local authorities and their client. The company did not provide further details on the incident but assured that the vessel would be restored to active service once the investigation was completed.
