The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has proposed new amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention to address the evolving needs of seafarers. These amendments include providing internet access for seafarers while at sea and implementing stronger requirements for a balanced, nutritious, and varied diet. A consultation seeking industry feedback on these changes has been launched, with responses being accepted from 11 December 2024 to 22 January 2025. The amendments are scheduled to enter into force on 23 December 2024.
Oliver Mallinson, Head of Seafarer Safety and Health at MCA, emphasized the importance of these amendments in supporting seafarers’ well-being and connectivity with their loved ones. The proposed changes also aim to address lessons learned during the Covid-19 pandemic, highlighting the need for seafarers to stay in touch with friends and family through social media and messaging apps while at sea. Additionally, the requirement for a balanced diet is being emphasized to ensure seafarers have access to nutritious meals that support their health and performance.
In addition to internet access and dietary requirements, the proposed regulations also include measures to protect seafarers from monetary loss and clarify financial accountability for vessels. These changes aim to enhance the overall health, safety, and well-being of seafarers by addressing key aspects that impact their work and quality of life. The MCA encourages industry stakeholders to participate in the consultation process to ensure their voices are heard and contribute to the development of effective regulations for the maritime sector.
