The UK is investigating reports of an attack on a cargo ship off the coast of Yemen, following an apparent explosion near the vessel on Sunday. The UK Maritime Trade Operations received a report of an incident 35 nautical miles south of Al Mukha, Yemen, where the master of the vessel reported an explosion in close proximity to the ship, resulting in damage. However, all crew members are reported to be safe. Vessels in the area are advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO.
The ship is believed to be UK-registered and Belize-flagged, and was reportedly attacked in the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The UK and the US have been conducting joint airstrikes against Houthi rebels since January 11, with support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and the Netherlands, in an effort to stop attacks on commercial shipping. The Houthi rebels, who are supported by Iran, have targeted ships in the Red Sea since November, often with tenuous or no clear links to Israel, threatening trade between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
