A 35-year-old man named Michael Virgil, who was subdued and detained by the cruise ship security team after an outburst, has passed away aboard Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas. The cause of death is still under investigation, and steps are being taken to protect the privacy of those involved. Virgil leaves behind a wife and 7-year-old son who were also on the cruise.
The incident occurred shortly after the ship departed Los Angeles for a sailing to Ensenada, Mexico. Virgil’s outburst, which included kicking at a doorway and assaulting crew members, was captured on film by another passenger. Security responded quickly, using pepper spray, zip ties, and handcuffs to subdue Virgil before taking him to the ship’s brig.
The FBI is investigating the incident, as it took place in international waters. Interviews are being conducted with passengers and crew members to gather more information. While questions remain about what caused Virgil’s behavior, it is unlikely that alcohol played a significant role, as the incident happened shortly after the ship set sail. The cruise continued without delay, returning to Los Angeles and continuing on its next voyage to Catalina Island and Ensenada.
Deaths on cruise ships are rare but can occur due to various reasons, including medical emergencies or deliberate acts. Regardless of the circumstances, such incidents are distressing for all involved. Our thoughts are with Virgil’s family and friends during this difficult time.
