Viking Supply Ships, based in Sweden, has recently secured a contract for the installation of four 100-ton heave-compensated offshore cranes on its fleet of ice classed anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessels. These advanced cranes are expected to enhance the vessels’ capabilities, allowing them to better meet the growing demand in the subsea sector. With these upgrades, the vessels will be able to take on a wider range of assignments in both the oil and gas industry and renewable energy projects, including offshore wind.
Scheduled for delivery starting in July 2026, the installation of the cranes will be phased in over time. The total investment for this project is estimated to be around $50 million, which will be financed through cash reserves and existing credit facilities. In addition to the crane installation, certain vessels will undergo modifications such as the construction of remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) hangars and the installation of launch and recovery systems for ROVs.
The project is a significant step for Viking Supply Ships as it aims to enhance its fleet’s capabilities and expand its service offerings in the offshore industry. These investments will not only improve the vessels’ performance but also enable them to take on a wider range of projects, ultimately strengthening the company’s position in the market. With the increasing demand for offshore services, these upgrades will position Viking Supply Ships as a competitive player in the industry.
