Oslo-based shipping company Wallenius Wilhelmsen has announced the expansion of its fleet with four new next-generation Shaper-class PCTC vessels, as part of their strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2027. These dual-fuel vessels will operate on alternative fuel sources such as methanol and are ammonia-prepared for future transition. With a capacity of 9,300 CEU, they will be among the world’s largest PCTC vessels.

The recent order from Jinling Shipyard now includes eight Shaper-class ships, with options for four more, with deliveries expected between 2026 and 2027. This move highlights Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s commitment to shaping the industry and accelerating towards net zero emissions. EVP & COO Xavier Leroi emphasized the importance of these new ships in their journey towards sustainability, alongside the company’s Aurora-class ships designed for environmental efficiency.

In addition to the Shaper-class vessels, Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s new building program includes 12 “Aurora” class ships, with ammonia-capable engines and a capacity of 9,100 CEU, ordered from Xiamen Shipbuilding. Scheduled to begin deliveries in the second half of 2024, these vessels are also part of the company’s efforts to reduce emissions and operate in a more environmentally friendly manner.
