Women in Maritime Africa, the Nigerian Chapter, is urging students in secondary and tertiary institutions to explore the diverse career opportunities available in the maritime sector, which offers over 150 different paths. The President of WIMA Nigeria, Mrs. Rollens Macfoy, delivered this message to students from senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions in Lagos. Schools such as Lagos State University, Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research, and University of Lagos were represented at the event.
Macfoy highlighted various opportunities in the maritime industry, including marine engineering, diving, oceanography, maritime law, crew management, hyperbaric medicine, and seafaring. She expressed concern over the lack of awareness about the vast career options in the maritime sector and emphasized the theme of ‘Safe horizons: Women shaping the future of maritime safety.’
Former Continental President of WIMA, Mrs. Jean Chiazor-Anishere, commended the efforts of WIMA in supporting women in the maritime industry. She noted the increasing presence of women in roles such as marine engineers, ship captains, and seafarers, attributing this progress to the advocacy and awareness efforts of organizations like WIMA Nigeria. The event also included a quiz segment where students showcased their knowledge of aspects of the blue economy, focusing on sustainability, port optimization, and the free flow of cargo.
