WinGD recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully running its X-DF-M methanol-fuelled engine design on more than 95% methanol fuel at full load. The 10-cylinder, 92-bore 10X92DF-M engine underwent testing at the CSSC-MES Diesel (CMD) testbed in Shanghai in December. This marks a significant step towards utilizing methanol as a primary fuel source for marine engines.
The engine is set to be installed on the fourth 16,000 TEU container vessel in a series being constructed for COSCO Shipping Lines. The previous vessels in the series, equipped with single-fuel 10X92-B engines, will be converted to run on methanol once the new X-DF-M engine is successfully commissioned.
The successful testing of the X-DF-M methanol-fuelled engine represents a significant advancement in the maritime industry’s transition towards more sustainable fuel sources. By demonstrating the viability of methanol as a primary fuel for marine engines, WinGD is paving the way for a more environmentally friendly future in shipping.
