Swiss marine power company WinGD has secured an order for 16 X-DF dual-fuel engines for eight LNG carriers, following a last-minute decision by a major ship owner. The order came late in the newbuilding planning phase due to concerns over the originally selected engines. Despite the timing, collaboration between WinGD, the engine builder, yard, and shipowner – who already uses X-DF engines on other LNG carriers – ensured that construction proceeded without delays. The client’s identity has not been disclosed by WinGD.

Introduced to the market in 2016, the X-DF engine has accumulated over 8 million reliable running hours and has more than 800 engines in service and on order. Recent upgrades to the next generation, version 2.2, have increased its appeal in the LNG carrier segment. This version features a smaller bedplate and A-frame tailored to the five-cylinder models commonly used on LNG carriers, resulting in a smaller engine footprint and greater ship design flexibility while maintaining high performance and efficiency.

Volkmar Galke, WinGD Director Sales, expressed satisfaction with the new order from a significant customer, highlighting the company’s established low-pressure two-stroke engine and strong relationships with engine builders and shipyards. The X-DF technology’s proven track record and continuous improvements have solidified its position in the market, making it a preferred choice for LNG carriers. The successful adoption of the X-DF engines in this order underscores their reliability and performance in the maritime industry.
