The Worldwide Ferry Safety Association (WFSA) recently announced the winners of its 11th Annual Student Competition for a Safe Affordable Ferry. The winning teams not only receive monetary awards but also have the opportunity to present their work at Interferry’s 48th annual conference in Marrakesh on October 28-29, 2024. This year’s competition focused on designing a RoPax vessel for the Niger River in Nigeria, accommodating passengers, cargo, and vehicles.
Dr. Roberta Weisbrod, Executive Director of WFSA, highlighted the importance of improving ferry safety in Nigeria, especially outside of Lagos where recent accidents have raised concerns. The winning team from Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology in Surabaya designed an innovative aluminum catamaran powered by CNG and alternative sources. The second and third-place teams from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology and Universitas Indonesia also presented cost-effective and sustainable designs.
Interferry’s CEO, Mike Corrigan, commended all the winners and expressed excitement about their participation at the upcoming conference. The WFSA, supported by the TK Foundation, provides monetary awards to the winners, with first place receiving $5,000, second place $3,000, and third place $1,000. The competition not only showcases innovative solutions for ferry safety but also fosters collaboration among students and professionals in the maritime industry.
