Swedish startup Candela recently introduced its hydrofoil electric ferry, Nova, which has officially started operating. The 30-passenger ferry, measuring 40 feet in length, departed from Tappström and reached Stockholm’s City Hall in just 30 minutes, covering a 15-kilometer route. Powered by electric motors, Nova flies a meter above the water’s surface, making it the fastest electric ferry globally and the quickest in Stockholm’s public transport fleet, cruising at 25 knots.
Nova, the first of Candela’s new P-12 model to enter service, boasts innovative hydrofoil technology that lifts the hull above water, reducing energy consumption by 80% and minimizing water friction. This allows the ferry to create a minimal wake, enabling it to operate faster in the harbor while adhering to wake regulations. Candela emphasizes that Nova does not require costly dock infrastructure and can recharge in less than an hour at a DC charging station.
Gustav Hasselskog, Candela’s founder and CEO, views Nova as a game-changer in urban transport, describing it as a revival of waterways. He believes Nova offers a faster, greener, and more affordable mode of transport compared to land options, marking a renaissance for waterborne travel. Candela has already secured orders from Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, and Berlin, showcasing the growing interest in hydrofoil electric ferries on a global scale.
