The San Francisco Bay Ferry, in partnership with public and private sectors, has launched the MV Sea Change, the world’s first commercial passenger ferry powered completely by zero-emission hydrogen fuel cells. Starting July 19, 2024, the vessel will operate a free route from Pier 41 to the Downtown San Francisco Ferry Terminal, with the aim of showcasing fuel cell technology as a viable solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality, representing a significant milestone in the maritime industry’s decarbonization efforts.

The Sea Change emits only water vapor, which is partially remineralized and reused in the onboard water fountain, making it the first vessel with “drinkable emissions.” The vessel is owned by SWITCH Maritime and was developed with funding from the California Air Resources Board, with sponsors including Chevron New Energies, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Highway and Transportation Service, and United Airlines enabling the demonstration service. The project has received praise from Governor Gavin Newsom for California’s leadership in combatting climate change and advancing renewable energy technologies.

The MV Sea Change, powered by Zero Emission Industries’ hydrogen power system, marks a significant advancement in hydrogen fuel cell technology, particularly crucial given the predicted record-breaking heat of 2024. As part of California Climate Investments, the project reflects a state-wide commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing cleaner transportation. Officials, including Washington Governor Jay Inslee and various representatives, have expressed support for the Sea Change as a model for clean energy transportation and infrastructure, highlighting its ability to lower emissions, improve public health, and drive sustainable innovation in the maritime industry.
