The multimillion-dollar yacht Obsession ran aground on a reef off Culebra, Puerto Rico, but survived Storm Ernesto unharmed. The vessel sustained flooding in one pontoon and could not be pumped out by the crew, leading to a potential environmental hazard due to the 800-1,500 gallons of diesel on board. The Coast Guard assumed control of the response and hired Salvor Resolve Marine to defuel and remove the yacht, with most of the fuel successfully pumped out by the end of July.
Despite the salvage efforts, the vessel still poses a pollution threat due to remaining oil products and hydraulic oil. Fortunately, Tropical Storm Ernesto did not impact the wreck site, allowing Resolve to mobilize a 400-tonne floating shearlegs barge to lift the yacht off the shoal. The final destination of the wreck is yet to be determined, but the owner of the yacht has acknowledged that the salvage project exceeds his capacity and will likely be responsible for the cost of the federally-organized response.
The salvor is closely monitoring weather conditions to ensure a safe lift of the vessel, emphasizing the need for favorable hurricane-season weather. The Coast Guard remains vigilant in managing the situation and ensuring that the potential environmental impact of the grounded yacht is minimized through prompt and effective response efforts. The successful removal of the yacht from the reef will be crucial in preventing further pollution and protecting the sensitive marine ecosystem in the area.
