Pro-Palestinian activists detonated a small bomb outside the Piraeus office of ZIM, Israel’s shipping line, using gas canisters to cause minor damage to the building. The explosion occurred outside of business hours and did not result in any injuries. Leaflets with pro-Palestine messaging were found at the scene, and while no one has claimed responsibility, Palestine-linked activists are suspected. Six people were briefly arrested and released, and an investigation into the perpetrators is ongoing.
ZIM has faced backlash since the Israel-Hamas conflict began, including being banned in Malaysia and threatened by Houthi rebels. The firm has also seen staff called up for Israel’s army reserve units. This bombing is the second at a shipping office in Piraeus in little more than a month, with a previous incident in December 2023 and another in 2020.
The blast caused minor damage to the ZIM office and also houses the offices of the Diaplous Group, a Greek maritime security company. The firm has faced challenges due to its support for the Israeli government and its partial government-owned status. An ongoing investigation is seeking to identify the perpetrators of the bombing.
