NorthStandard has released a report titled “ETA – Learning from the Data,” based on two years of ECDIS Training Assessment data. Analyzing over 5,000 assessments, it identifies critical knowledge gaps in bridge teams, particularly in handling Electronic Navigational Chart updates and alarms. This initiative, developed with the UK Hydrographic Office, aims to enhance ECDIS proficiency.
On December 27, 2025, the cruise ship Coral Adventurer ran aground near Dregerhafen, Papua New Guinea, due to a malfunction in its ECDIS. The chief mate’s modified route plan failed to load, causing delays and ultimately leading the vessel into hazardous waters. Despite attempts to regain control, the ship struck shallow ground.
The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) member states have approved the first operational standards under the S-100 framework, allowing for the integration of various datasets into a single Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS). This adoption is expected to significantly impact ocean data collection, sea surveys, and maritime safety, efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
