The Shipping Ministry confirmed no incidents involving Indian ships or seafarers over the previous day. Currently, 20 Indian-flagged vessels are operating safely in the Persian Gulf, with effective communication maintained. Additionally, 50 Indian seafarers have been repatriated, and port operations across the country are functioning normally.
As tensions mount in West Asia, 38 Indian-flagged ships, carrying around 1,100 seafarers, remain stranded in the Persian Gulf. This situation raises serious concerns for maritime safety and global trade. Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has convened a review to address these issues and ensure the safety of Indian personnel.
The central government has appointed Vijay Kumar, a 1992 IAS officer, as the new secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways. Starting October 1, he will transition from his current role as chairman of the Waterways Authority of India, where he has advanced the country’s water transport network.
The Indian government is considering granting infrastructure status to the shipping industry, aiming to boost its global ranking in shipbuilding by 2047. This change would facilitate long-term financing for shipping companies, enhancing domestic ownership and supporting local shipyards, while leveling the competitive landscape against foreign firms with cheaper funding.
