Demonstrations are underway for an innovative power solution being retrofitted onto the ultramax bulker Maria Tipoc. Part of the WHISPER initiative, this project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in maritime transport. It features a tiltable rigid wingsail and solar panels, marking a significant step towards sustainable shipping practices.
TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING and OceanWings have installed a rigid wingsail on the Ultramax bulk carrier MARIA TOPIC, advancing wind-assisted propulsion in commercial shipping. This retrofit, completed in Japan, demonstrates the potential for innovative technologies to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, with insights to be shared at SMM Hamburg in September 2026.
