A machine room fire occurred aboard the Adora Mediterranea cruise ship while it was docked in Jeju, South Korea, causing three crew members to sustain injuries. The incident took place on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, during a port of call visit to Jeju, with smoke observed coming from the ship’s starboard side. The fire was promptly extinguished by the ship’s safety systems, including sprinklers.
Approximately 50 square meters of the vessel’s engine room were burned in the incident, but there was no reported impact on critical onboard systems. Three crew members were treated for smoke inhalation, and no severe injuries were documented. Passengers were off the ship during the fire, enjoying a day in Jeju, and were later accommodated in local hotels without charge.
Following inspections by marine safety officers, the Adora Mediterranea was deemed safe to resume sailing to its homeport in China, although departure from Jeju was delayed for further repairs and inspections. As a gesture of goodwill, guests were offered complimentary tours of Jeju and provided refunds for the disrupted voyage. The cause of the fire, believed to be linked to the air conditioning system, is under investigation, and preventative measures are being taken to avoid similar incidents in the future.
