Amazon India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IWAI under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways to facilitate containerized cargo movement and establish a network for cargo shipment on inland waterways. This deal will allow Amazon to expand its supply chain to include navigable inland waterways spanning 14,500 km, comprising rivers, canals, backwaters, and creeks.
In January this year, Amazon already launched Amazon Air, a dedicated air cargo network in India. The Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, stated that the MoU with Amazon India is a significant step towards harnessing the potential of India’s inland water transport. This mode of transportation is recognized as one of the most environmentally friendly, consuming significantly less fuel compared to rail and road. The Centre has initiated Sagarmala, focusing on RoRo/RoPax and Inland Water Transport to bolster water transport in India, with ambitious goals of increasing inland water transport volumes to more than 200 MMT by 2030 and surpassing 500 MMT by 2047.
