Anneliese Jost from Germany has been chosen as the recipient of the International Maritime Prize for 2022, announced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The decision was made by the IMO Council during its 129th session, held from July 17-21, after Jost was nominated by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany. Germany highlighted Jost’s crucial contribution to the objectives of IMO, particularly in the area of maritime safety. Her nomination emphasized her calm and convincing communication style. Jost, who was born in Munich, holds a mechanical engineering degree with a specialization in shipbuilding from the University of Michigan, USA.

Throughout her career, Jost has served as a construction supervisor in hydraulic engineering in Berlin and as a surveyor of newly-built ships in Hamburg’s Germanischer Lloyd. She later became the Assistant Head and Deputy Head of the Maritime Safety Division within Germany’s Ministry for Digital and Transport. Until her retirement in January 2023, she led Germany’s IMO audit team. Jost also represented Germany in IMO, conducting various studies to further develop IMO regulations and serving as a technical expert to different IMO bodies.

From 2006 to 2016, Jost chaired the IMO Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Equipment, as well as on Ship Design and Construction. During this period, significant measures were adopted, including towing wrecked ships and discussions on the Code of Safety for Special Purpose Ships, maintenance of life-saving appliances, and navigation in polar waters. Jost additionally served as the Chair of the Working Party on Subdivision, Stability, and Load Lines (WPSSLL) of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS).

The International Maritime Prize, presented annually by IMO, recognizes individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to the work and objectives of the organization. The award includes a dolphin sculpture and a financial prize, along with the opportunity to submit an academic paper on a relevant subject. Jost will be honored during the 33rd session of the IMO Assembly, which will take place from November 27 to December 6.
