The Lloyd’s Register (LR) Maritime Decarbonisation Hub has joined forces with five leading shipowners to establish the Maritime Emissions Reduction Centre (M-ERC) in Athens. The M-ERC is a not-for-profit organization aimed at removing barriers to the uptake of innovative solutions to reduce Green House Gas emissions from the global fleet. It will also facilitate collaboration and provide a safe space for stakeholders in the maritime value chain to navigate towards net zero safely.
The M-ERC will use applied research and innovation to inspire and inform the adoption of new and existing solutions for the maritime energy transition. It will also work to drive optimal operational achievements and ensure that vessels are suitable for the energy transition. The centre will also focus on upskilling and raising awareness among seafarers and shore-based staff.
The collaboration between LR and the shipowners, including Star Bulk, Capital Group, Neda Maritime Agency, Navios Maritime Partners, and Thenamaris, will seek global and regional funding to support the initiatives of the M-ERC. It is expected that more shipping stakeholders will join the initiative in the future.
