Attention of Finnish authorities aimed at vessels in proximity of pipe damage

Finnish investigators are currently looking into the vessels that were present in the area where a Finnish-Estonian gas pipeline and telecommunications cable were damaged earlier this month. The investigation is primarily focused on Chinese and Russian vessels, including the New new polar bear and Sevmorput. The New new polar bear is a Hong Kong-registered container ship owned by a Chinese company, while the Sevmorput is a Russian nuclear-powered cargo ship owned by the Russian government. Detective Commissioner Risto Lohi of Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation stated that the ships’ movements, background, and previous activities are being examined in cooperation with other countries’ authorities to gain more insight into the incident.

On October 10th, the Balticconnector subsea pipeline and telecommunications cable in the Baltic Sea were damaged by “external activities,” according to Finnish officials. A joint investigation team has been established by the Finnish Police and the Border Guard to look into the incident. Additionally, it has been reported that a Baltic Sea telecommunications cable connecting Sweden and Estonia was also damaged around the same time.
