AUS and UK Invest in Maritime Hydrogen Project

The Federal Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water will partner with the UK’s Innovate UK to fund the HyZEM project, aimed at driving decarbonisation in the maritime sector. With a total investment of £2.88 million ($A5.54 million), the project will focus on developing low-carbon green hydrogen technology for high-powered workboats. Freeport East, a major UK port, praised the significant investment in this international green hydrogen initiative.

The project aims to reduce the risks of deploying new technology and accelerate the adoption of marine green hydrogen. It will demonstrate practical applications for green hydrogen storage and propulsion on vessels, including bunkering technology and port storage. The collaboration between UK and Australian businesses specializing in green hydrogen storage and propulsion technologies is expected to support the development and adaptation of zero-emission technologies in the maritime industry.

Steamology, Duodrive Limited, Chartwell Marine Limited, and The Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult are among the partners involved in the HyZEM project. Through innovative technologies such as zero-emission hydrogen steam turbines and electric marine propulsion systems, the project seeks to advance the use of green hydrogen in the maritime industry. The collaboration between Australia and the UK in developing next-generation hydrogen storage systems is aimed at achieving efficiency, safety, and cost improvements for high-powered workboats.
