Stena Bulk has announced its plans to register up to five of its Suezmax vessels under the Swedish flag. These Suezmax tankers are among the largest types of tankers, measuring approximately 275 meters in length and with a gross tonnage of 81,000 tonnes. This move will make these vessels the largest ships flying the Swedish flag, filling a current gap in the nation’s maritime registry.
Sweden has been taking steps to enhance its competitiveness as a shipping nation, with reforms such as the removal of stamp duty on ship registration and improvements to the Swedish Ship Register. These changes, along with a proposed more competitive tonnage tax regime, have created a more favorable environment for domestic investment in the shipping industry. This decision by Stena Bulk reflects the evolving geopolitical landscape and the increasing importance of controlling strategic transportation assets.
Efforts are underway to ensure a smooth transition for the vessels to be registered under the Swedish flag by around July 1, 2025. Stena Bulk is collaborating closely with Swedish authorities and trade unions to address all aspects of the transition, from crewing to compliance, to maintain safe and efficient operations. This initiative is not only a priority for the company but also aims to support the wider maritime ecosystem in Sweden by creating demand for Swedish officers, seafarers, and maritime professionals.
By having these Suezmax tankers under the Swedish flag, Sweden will have a stronger influence on global maritime regulations through institutions like the European Union and the International Maritime Organization. This move is a significant step towards strengthening Sweden’s maritime industry and ensuring its competitiveness on the international stage.
