BIO-UV Group has successfully launched its first commercial containerised BIO-SEA ballast water treatment system (BWTS) at Port-la-Nouvelle in southern France. This initiative supports the pioneering EFGL floating offshore wind project in the Mediterranean, a collaboration led by Eoliennes Flottantes du Golfe du Lion, which is primarily owned by Ocean Winds and Banque des Territoires.
The project marks a significant milestone for integrating marine environmental technologies into renewable energy. BIO-UV’s containerised system treated water from three floating wind turbine platforms before their offshore deployment. A rental agreement with Euroports facilitated compliant deballasting services during the assembly phase, ensuring that the ballast water was treated according to IMO D-2 standards before being discharged back into the port.
“This project is crucial for BIO-UV Group,” said Maxime Dedeurwaerder, Solutions Business Unit Director. The unit’s modular design allows it to be quayside for efficient water treatment, reducing risks of aquatic species transfer. As the first pilot-scale floating wind farm in Occitanie, the EFGL project is seen as pivotal for Europe’s net-zero goals.
BIO-UV aims to expand the adoption of its BWTS in future floating wind projects across Europe, emphasizing the need for environmental protection and operational efficiency in the evolving offshore wind sector.
