Two people were killed and five others were missing after a small motorboat collided with a cruise ship on the Danube north of Budapest late on Saturday, according to Hungarian police. Civil protection units were still searching for the missing individuals along the Hungarian stretch of the Danube. Eight adults were on board the motorboat at the time of the collision, and the accident was reported after a man was found injured near the river road.

A man’s body was recovered south of Veroce, while a woman’s body was found further downstream near a bridge in Budapest, where the damaged motorboat was also recovered. The cruise ship involved in the accident, the Swiss-based Heidelberg, had scratches on its bow and was stopped in Komarom. A group of Chinese tourists who were on board were unaware of the accident at the time.

Police have launched a criminal investigation to determine the cause of the accident and establish if anyone is guilty of a crime. The aim of the investigation is to bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding the collision.
