The US has announced further sanctions against Russia, targeting over 300 individual items and extending beyond Russia and into 20 other countries. The measures impact shipping and shipbuilding, adding four companies involved in Indiga and Akvamarin Limited to the list, as well as targeting the relationship between Russia and Iran to expand logistics networks. The UK launched its own sanctions against 86 individuals and entities, with a focus on sectors including energy, metals, military, finance, and banking, highlighting the theft of Ukrainian grain. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak indicated that the UK would introduce additional import bans on Russian diamonds and metals. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen declared that the sanctions were aimed at depriving Russia of the resources to develop its military and halt Kremlin revenues funding the war in Ukraine.

The US sanctions list, which targets the energy, military procurement, metals, and mining sectors and includes shipbuilding companies, also aims to prevent the circumvention of existing sanctions. Targeted shipbuilding firm, Samusskiy Sudostroitelno Sudoremontniy Zavod, has built ten ships to handle logistics and facilitate cargo delivery in Russia’s Arctic region. The US has also designated Khazar Sea Shipping Lines, an Iranian firm that engaged in over 60 port calls in Russia last year, in an attempt to prevent efforts between Russia and Iran to develop logistics networks.

Both the US and UK have targeted Sovcomflot for over a year. In this latest development, the UK targeted six shipping companies and managers directly linked to Sovcomflot for their links to grain theft and their attempts to evade existing sanctions. The UK added that it was not finished expanding its efforts to sanction Russia, with Foreign Secretary James Cleverly warning they intended to immobilize Russian assets until it pays for the damage caused in Ukraine.

The comprehensive actions also include combating illegal shipments, the dark fleet, and measures to lift sanctions. On the impact of the sanctions, both countries have stated the sanctions intend to go beyond ending the war with Russia, immobilizing its assets until it pays for damage caused in Ukraine.
